Monroe Mustangs Compete in NJCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships

TOPEKA, Kan. - The Monroe University – New Rochelle women's and men's indoor track and field teams competed in the 2026 NJCAA Championships, in Topeka, Kansas, on March 6 and March 7. The events took place inside the Sneed Indoor Athletic Facility.
Sophomore Sarah Lea Cohen of the women's indoor track and field team earned a podium finish during day two of the 2026 NJCAA National Championships on Saturday, capping off a successful trip to Topeka for the Mustangs.
Cohen placed eighth overall in the 800m final with a time of 2:18.93. Her performance gained her USTFCCCA First Team All-American honors.
The Mustangs wrapped up their weekend in the 4x400m relay. In the 1600m relay, freshmen Brooke Sheppard, Sarah Lea-Cohen, Tanesia Gardiner, and Kaliyah Jones delivered one of their season's best performances. The quartet ran a time of 3:50.16, which is the second fastest time ran this season for the Mustangs.
Sheppard opened the race with a 57.93 split on the first leg to set the tone. Cohen ran the second leg for mustangs in a time of 57.68. Gardiner the 800m specialist, followed with a 58.13 split on the third leg before handing the baton to Jones, who anchored the team in a time of 56.40.
On the men's side, freshman Shaquane Toussaint and sophomore Modou Sanneh both earned podium finishes in the 200m and 400m respectively during day two of the 2026 NJCAA National Championships on Saturday.
Toussaint had one day after setting a new school record and personal best time in the 200m and did so once more on the last day. Toussaint placed 2nd overall with a time of 20.73, which is not only a new school record but also the fastest time in program history. His performance also earned him USTFCCCA first-team All-American status.
Sanneh highlighted a terrific finish to the indoor season for the Mustangs, placing seventh overall with a time of 46.91. His performance also earned him USTFCCCA first-team All-American status.
