Rockland Claims Men's Tennis Title

The Rockland Hawks laid claim to the 2016 Region XV Division III Men's Tennis Championship last weekend, leading the 3-team field with 16 points to capture the title. Suffolk finished in second with 9 points, followed by Kingsborough with 2 points.

Hawks players swept all but one flight in singles play and earned the victory in doubles competition as well. Jonathan Compres defeated KCC's Michael Cornelius 6-1, 6-0 in the first flight. Lysander Payano Almonte knocked off Matt Croche of Suffolk 6-2, 6-1 in the second flight, and Jervahn Marshall swept Suffolk's Mike Molitor 6-3, 6-1. Yash Bagat defeated Suffolk's Tim Casey in fourth flight, and Jacob Rosenfeld defeated Suffolk's Alex Jankowitz in sixth flight. The team's only defeat came in the fifth flight final where Rockland's Warren Brown fell to Suffolk's Tristan Delfox by a score of 6-1, 6-1.

Each flight's champion earned All-Region First Team status, while the runners up were named to the All-Region Second Team.

Additionally, Rockland's top duo of Almonte and Compres easily defeated Kingsborough's pair of Cornelius and Andor Kasuba.
