Nassau Wrestling Wins Non-Scholarship National Championship

The Nassau Lions had a strong showing at this year's NJCAA National Wrestling Tournament, finishing in the top 10 overall out of 40 teams and winning the non-scholarship National Title with a point total of 62.0.

The team originally qualified for the tournament after edging out Rowan in the District Championship by a margin of 3.5 points.

Freshman Joseph Russ (133 pounds) became the twelfth Nassau Community College wrestler to win an individual national championship.

Russ avenged an early season loss by beating the #1 ranked wrestler Mizam Tamaradze from Springfield Tech CC (8-5) in the finals.

The Lions had two wrestlers also earn All-American honors Mark West (141) and Giovanni Santiago (184).

Although the following wrestlers did not earn All-American honors they won valuable points which helped Nassau Community College win the overall team title at the District Tournament; Josh Antoine (125), Tom McLoughlin (149), Sam Schwartzapfel (157), Deuly Espinal (165), Zack Small (174) and Jenard Rosemond (285).

Also, five wrestlers were named to the Coaches All-Academic team (Josh Antoine, Deuly Espinal, Dominic Holder, Tom McLoughlin and Danny Weiss).

Coach Paul Schmidt was named NJCAA Non-Scholarship National Coach of the Year.
