FIT Women's Tennis Places 3rd in the Nation

Flushing, NY - The nasty wind driven rains of a nor'easter made it impossible to play outdoors for the first two days of the National Tennis Championships, but that didn't impact the FIT Women's Tennis Team from coming up big. The team finished 3rd in the country at the 2014 NJCAA DIII Women's Tennis National Championships back on October 25th. All the exciting finals action took place on the outdoor courts at the historic USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

"The entire team contributed to this 3rd place finish," said Region XV Coach of the Year Lynn Cabot-Puro. "It was an incredible team effort. I am so proud of our each one of our student athletes."

Indeed, it takes a strong team from first through sixth to have such a strong finish. Each student athlete made their mark in their flights. Highlighting the Tournament's play were two FIT Women's Tennis student athletes who earned Nationals Champion status. In the finals action, freshman Nicole Druzinsky dealt Camden's Shenida Watkins a 6-3, 6-4 defeat and won the First Singles flight. Nicole Druzhinsky and fellow Fashion Institute of Technology teammate, freshman Spenser Corson, won a dramatic First Doubles championship decision, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(3), over Sarah Bailey and Stefanie Ebo from Oxford College of Emory. Both Druzinsky and Corson earned First Team All-American status. Sophomore Ravina Parikh finished National Champion Runner-up in Fourth singles and was named a Second Team All-American.

Nicole Druzinsky was also awarded the 2014 "Spirit of Competition" Award; this is a National Award presented to the student-athlete that demonstrates the highest level of sportsmanship and character by the Women's Tennis Coaches Association. Druzinsky joins good company, as the 2013 Spirit of Competition Award was presented to Keerthana Sivaramakrishnan. Better known to FIT as "Kiki", Sivaramakrishnan inspired FIT Athletics to develop our annual award, the FIT Tiger Sportsmanship Ambassador Award this award recognizes these admirable attributes and is awarded at the FIT Tiger Pride Awards Night.

This fantastic finish adds to the incredible run that the FIT Women's Tennis Team has been on for years. FIT Women's Tennis has been a national contender for many years, finishing top 3 in the nation each season since 2011.
