FIT Women's Tennis Crowned Region Champions

(Brookhaven, NY) It was difficult for any member of the FIT Tennis team to get the overjoyed smile off of their faces after the Regional Championships this weekend. They competed hard at Suffolk County Community College. It was certainly a tough battle between, but the Lady Tigers came out on the other side and seized the Regional Championship.
Impressively, every student-athlete made it to the finals of singles and doubles, and most came out with wins.
Spenser Corson played first singles and toughed out a competitive pair of sets. She gave Rockland's Elena Arakelyan a run for her money but fell short, losing 7-5, 6-0. Corinn Hakanson went head to head with Kayla Daddario from Suffolk. She took control early on and won 6-2, 7-5. Rachel Edwards came up just short of beating Suffolk's Natasha Solovyov. They went into 3 sets, finishing 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. At fourth singles, Alexandra Krynyski challenged Mackenzie Martocci from Suffolk and took her down in two sets. The final scores were 6-2, 6-3. Kiana Brooks crushed Margaret Hartofilis of Suffolk, keeping her scoreless for both sets and finishing 6-0, 6-0. Rounding out the winning theme was Maia Speulveda, who overcame Suffolk's Jasmin Harrison. She buried her 6-1 in the first set and 6-2 in the second to seal the deal.
Moving on to doubles, Corson and Brooks fought hard to overcome Suffolk's Daddario and Kaitlyn Mead. Suffolk's won the first set 6-0, and the Lady Tigers took the second 6-1. It came down to the wire, but FIT just couldn't close the deal and lost 6-3. Hakanson and Krynyski had a pair of close matches, but fell to Solovyov and Martocci from Suffolk 6-4, 6-2. The third doubles were Edwards and Sepulveda who carried out the only doubles win. They only let Suffolk score two points from both sets combined. The first set was a 6-2 Tigers victory, and the last set saw Suffolk get shut out 6-0.
Region Coach of the Year is always a very prestigious award, and this year it went to FIT's Lynn Cabot Puro.
"Winning Region Coach of the Year means more to me than just the title," said Puro. "It means that I have given all I have to this team and have proven to them my dedication throughout the season. These girls mean so much to me."
The Tigers will have a weekend to rest, as they physically and mentally prepare for their travel to Peachtree City, GA to compete in the NJCAA DIII National Women's Tennis Championship. You can catch the Tigers in action from October 22 - 25th as they battle the best teams in the country to win the NJCAA DIII Championships.
